Rock the Taskbar

A few months ago when I saw Jobs' keynote on the iPhone SDK and the applications that were coming down the road, I was really excited. The one that caught my eye was Band. Virtual piano, drum kit, bass guitar and 12 bar blues. Yeah, I knew it was going to be a toy, but I thought that it would be pretty fun to screw around with. I've always wanted to learn an instrument, but instead of taking lessons, I get drawn to non-traditional instruments. Band sucks. It could easily be, and most likely, my lack of musical ability, but I'm equating that software with the $0.99 noise makers that my kids continually get from their grandparents.

Late last night, I discovered a new app though: BeatMaker. Yup, it runs on the phone (or a Touch, if you prefer). Sequencer, fx, pads, ability to import samples and export tunes. It also comes in at a hefty 114mb which is the largest iPhone app I've installed to date. Band? 8.5mb.

A (poorly produced) review of the app:

And somewhere in NYC Van is now thinking "dude, lets hear some original music". Well, I got none. Once I spend some more time with this I'll post something. My issue with posting tunes is that they lack form. Everytime I pick up my Tenori, I envision putting together a track. I end up getting lost in the Tenori-hole for an hour and end up just jamming. The wife digs some of the stuff though, but alas, it is never recorded.

It is coming though. Original tracks, for better or worse, will be posted.

And while I'm posting youtube clips, I'm pretty excited about Wii Music. Not quite what I was expecting, but still seems fun nonetheless. I have so many ideas on non-traditional instruments that could leverage the Wii and its various peripherals. I would love to sucked into an immersive music program that leveraged 3 dimensional space, nice graphics, etc.

Yeah, maybe it was the Mario theme song w/Sitar that comes in at 0:56 that sold me on it.

Dude - how did you know I was thinking that... :) I think that you should record some of the Tenori stuff and then email me a file - and then see what I send back to you - that's as interactive and immersive as you're going to get. LOL!!! Seriously - it will lead to you wanting to learn an instrument, and while I agree that a 3D immersive program that allows you to create your own music (intuitively as well) would be amazing, there is nothing more satisfying than writing and/or jamming with other human beings... (and with a head nod to Tyler - whether there are hot chicks there or not) - people getting in to your original music is an even bigger kick in the head ultimately - worth the investment in time for sure.

Start with sending me a Tenori track that your wife, or you, or anyone else digs... and I'll show you what I mean...

the pads deal look sweet, I could definetely find a hole in there to fall into for 5 hours if nothing jostled me out of my pads trance...I need to get my hands on this roland beat machine I messed around with a few years back. It was back when MARS MUSIC was still open down in Towson, Maryland -> i grabbed a jackson electric, plugged it into a marshall stack with a 30 foot chord and went back to the roland and fooled around for a half an hour getting this beat set up and then hit play and jammed on the guitar over the beat for at least another half an hour. had a little crowd gathered man it was sweet. MARS MUSIC rocked dude, I would take a few bong hits in the parking lot, and go in and jam on all their crap, and no slaesman ever bugged me, they encouraged you to just play with all their SH%$, I probably spent 6 hours in there a week meeting other metal heads and hot chicks who listened to me play, and some not so hot chicks, but I think I only ever bought a pack of strings, a few picks, and a strap. It was heaven!
