If it was a pay site, I could understand some manner of protest of this nature. However, I am not one whom posts with any frequency, so my level of frustration is well under that of others.
and thanks for opening up ye olde mogpeeps:)

Sure :) ... I'm with you, don't post that much either - tend to comment a lot more than anything else... and also agree that the level of anger would make more sense, if MOG was a pay site. Thanks for dropping by.

The genesis of the strike is at Multiply and I'm really burned out on commenting so I will recycle here some things I've said....

I understand how people feel hurt for sure..on both or all 3 sides. strike, anti-strike,neutral. However, if the bonds are truly strong, folks will get over it. I told David not to take it personal and I would hope others would do the same. If they don't and want to freeze me out..fine. I don't think we can hurt the site! There are plenty of people on the site. In fact it'll give a chance for people to jump in and participate. I hope they do.

One problem that hasn't been mentioned too much is how so few new voices (the new adds who are keeping the site viable by increasing the subscription numbers) are contributing. This is their chance to get up, get into it, and get involved.

After tomorrow when the reaction posts from the non-strikers fade, then perhaps things will calm down, and people who are still there will post and some will respond and MOG will be just like it was..an endless stream of posts about music and related stuff. No one will know about the strike unless they search around. It is up to the other zillion people on the site to pick up the slack and make some posts, which I'm sure they will do.

We aren't that many people, we got our issue heard and now life should go on..They are grown ups over there, I'm sure they can handle it..There might be some friction coming back, but I'm sure that'll go away after a short time as well, 'cause what lizzie sez is on point,"I don't believe there is a single ONE of us who are protesting that don't love MOG (or at least don't love our fellow MOGgers). "

Could we have organized a little better, maybe..but in the end I think we are getting the job done.

This was a reply to Sturgell who said we were on a power trip and that the strike has a life of its own...
If this is a power trip..what power do maybe 20 or 30 people on a huge site wield?

I mean what I see is a group of folks with various bitches...but for me the main thrust is this...people are frustrated because they see their friends leaving the site because of functionality issues..They are torn because they love, love, love, love the site. When you love something, invest your time in something, and care about something it can become emotional.

I would be the first to apologize to every tech worker in person, because (at least for me) it has nothing to do with the tech workers..It has to do with expressing frustration with a site I have come to love.

I would also say that I didn't like the way things went down with the avatars and such..but I had to stand with my peeps. I wanted to do something else, that would've been quieter but ended in a very similar way. Getting the frustration out in the open...

Would it be better if everyone of these people made a post listing their individual beef with the site? I do not think so, and besides folks have been doing that anyway. Complaining and bitching was at an all time high. I hate that too.

We're also asking about priorities, which has nothing to do with programmers or tech people and everything to do with the management of the site.
People wonder, as we continue to grow, while don't we stabilize the regular operation of the site(the thing that keeps many, many loyal moggers coming back day after day) before bells and whistles are added?

I have more..
What do you mean by a life of its own...There were maybe 2 posts on MOG about the strike in the last 24 hours..all anti or capitulating..Oh yeah, i hate that it is even called a strike, but I didn't have a vote. Everybody is working hard to keep things cool..

Of course there are some folks that have personal issues with MOG or MOG folk..can't do anything about that 'cause its not me. I like MOG and MOG folk, they are the ones that made my favorite website. There are also very tech savvy people who don't buy the explanation of tech problems. Again, I don't know shit about that so I don't speak on it.

I took down my strike post and have offered to take down the avatar as well (if everyone else will agree)..and I will return to posting on Friday.

It could've been done better, but the point is across. I don't think it is a prelude to a mass exodus, and of course no one thinks that they want their site to be broken. This is a plea to get it fixed because people were quitting the site well bfore the strike due to performance issues !

Before the strike they went quietly one by one and would continue to do so. The strike is a way to say, hey, get the shit together, people are leaving. I've said it before and I'll say it again..I ain't leaving..

What would be better, if every mogger individually bitched in a post or if we did as we did? I was tired of whining about this and that so I participated in a group whine. Then there was a group reaction..some negative, some positive, some down the middle...By Monday, unless someone stirs the pot this will be less of an issue, and by Tuesday it will be gone...If the Moggers who are still on the site make posts! We aren't that many people! I encourage the people still there to kick it up a notch and do some kick ass posts. Here's some good news:

On March 3rd I pulled these stats from MOG:

Over the past 24 hours going back from 5:05 EST today there have been 110 MOG posts. Those posts received 172 comments, and folks pushed the LIKE Button just 77 times.
That works out to an average of 1.56 comments per post and .7 likes per post.
________________________________________________________________

In the past 24 hours, Friday 6 PM to Sat 6PM Eastern May 16/17 there have been 83 posts receiving 211 comments and 143 Likes for an average of 2.54 comments per post and 1.72 likes per post.
______________________________________________________________

While there has been a reduction in total posts post-strike, folks are commenting and liking a lot more...participating. I can dig that. MOG will be fine, if the folks who are on MOG do some MOGGING..

I just wrote a mail to deadman telling him my thoughts on the matter...I mean by Wednesday is anyone at MOG gonna be talking about the strike of '08? I expect to get a little shit when I get back, but I am not gonna speak about the strike or complain about bugs ever again at MOG. If I have to go through any drama, I'll just leave without a fucking peep. I told deadman I'd argue with him til I'm blue in the face about Obama or blues guys or whatever, but if the strike or bugs or spam comes up... my mouth will be zipped.
I ain't gonna get mad at folks slagging us over there now, cause they are feeling the way we were just a few days before...but I'm gonna cool off and I hope they do the same.
If they can't hang with that...I'd rather switch than fight.

Like I've said to Hyman and a lot to everyone the last few:
1-We love MOG
2-We want the site to work better
3-We were frustrated enough to say so collectively
4-People are leaving the site
5-For the most part we are not leaving
6-At least personally, I have expressed thanks and praises for MOG staff directly to them, in posts, and by the numerous folks I mention the site to
7-In a lot of ways it was a group whine, instead of multiple bug related posts, just to make absolutely sure the people know we give a damn
8-Functionality beats bells and whistles
9-Some people have legit and/or petty gripes with individual people at MOG
10- The loss of some people in the community has been quiet and unnoticed
11- I have encouraged all non-strikers to continue posting and there was very little campaigning to get people to strike

Sure feathers are ruffled a tad..the way they are on any site when there is controversy, but I'm trying to keep it clean. As I have told a lot o' folks, i'm gonna come back posts-blazin' and not talking about bugs or strikes ever again, even if people ask me to. I will argue (as i am wont to do) with anybody about anything, except strikes and bugs.
This is our(my) imperfect statement of o tough love for the site.
I don't hate anybody..I want the place to thrive.
I invite all moggers not boycotting/striking/fasting to MOG on.
I didn't see if anyone took my bet, but I'm sayin' things will be back to normal by Wednesday.
I'm not gonna add any slag to the pile.

What I replied to Hyman when he Pm'd me (first he sent a form letter, a letter he sent to a couple of folks), then he sent a letter saying Bartleby was wrong about data sharing, then he sent a letter saying he was sad and that he loved us..
I said:
I love you guys, too. My last post prior to the strike (well after a crash
casualty)was about how MOG rules, I congratulated you guys on your funding, I tried out
Rhapsody. Don't get me wrong I love MOG and appreciate the greatness of what you have
done.

In my mind, instead of 100 random posts bitching and moaning about bugs, we decided to
get all the angst out at once. Hell I was tired of reading cranky posts, so hopefully in
a week it will be over.

Don't take it personal, this is the community wishing and hoping for the best, and truly
speaking its mind. Which is why we all love MOG in the first place.

Peace

Really really well put. The other reason that I put up Mogpeeps is that I would hate to see any of the strikers "leave without a peep" as you said... and lose touch/contact - because the biggest draw to the site are the people and then the technology in that order. I am hoping that people will at least register here so that they don't just disappear... because technology is something that can be fixed - and even replicated elsewhere if need be. I'm one of those very technical people, and can tell you, I'm sure the MOG guys were doing a lot, with very little, for a very long time... hopefully the new shot in the arm will keep it all running smoothly ... but in the meantime, lets at least use this as a catch all for people on MOG - so that we don't lose touch, regardless of what happens at MOG on the Biz or the Tech side.

I too am going to cut & paste... burned out is an understatement ;)

My thoughts on this protest... May 17, '08 2:16 PM

I am so sad right now. Incredibly so. So much is misunderstood I think... on all sides of this... it's not a case of those standing with MOG & those standing against because I don't believe there is a single ONE of us who are protesting that don't love MOG (or at least don't love our fellow MOGgers). There's so much more GREY in this equation than black or white alone.

One of my main problems that I am really struggling with today... that so much is being said ON MOG about those of us not posting for a week & because of our stance, we have no way of expressing our thoughts or feelings. My thanks to Anna who stated on one of those posts that if someone questions our intentions... they should contact us here. I have yet to be contacted.

Another problem is that I feel like most of my friends and family feel I am letting them down, or intentionally trying to hurt them/MOG & that was never my intention nor do I believe it was anyone elses.

Kiddies... I am seriously worried that this is going to do more harm than good. Not with regards to MOG & its functionality. They've had issues for over a year - they will continue to have issues - they do what they can, sometimes it doesn't seem like they are taking our concerns to heart - sadly there is no way for me to know for certain - I can only go by the fact that when we talk about stability & wanting the site to be more functionality less big features - it seems to fall on deaf ears. I AM WORRIED that it's going to negatively affect the most amazing relationships I've ever forged. & these are all relationships that began ONLINE - who knew ;) I feel that we're all being pulled - not that we aren't making our own solid decisions based on what's going on, but that people (me included) are having our loyalties questioned & that we are feeling let down in one way or another - whether it's by each other or by those working for MOG.

Some things I find interesting... DH is commenting on quite a few posts... granted there are a lot less posts to comment on with so many taking a week off... but it's odd, like he's trying to make sure he has more siding with him & this is something we haven't done. I've had several MOGgers contact me trying to find out what was going on, & I have PURPOSELY expressed to them that there is nothing to stress - no matter what they do/we do - we are all friends/family & that won't change. I stand by that but feel that even with me not wanting things to change, even with my feelings not changing... that others' feelings are changing. & not for the better.

Also, there are those working for MOG that have either directly or indirectly offended me both before & after this "strike" began. That leaves a really foul taste in my mouth.

Many of you know of an email I received on May 5th from the product manager - not a one of you disagreed with my original reading of that the writer was condesending & rude/trite.

And some of the comments the MOG employees are writing on the "strikers'" posts as well as those who are still posting are hurtful as well.

I have read most of the posts regarding those who are leaving for a week - there were many a comment regarding a love of MOG... a hope for a more stable future, a standing united in peaceful protest.

Yet, I feel like some are viewing me & those protesting as lepers or soldiers of death.

I just need to get this out... it's been eating at me since last night... making me feel worse & worse & I don't like feeling this way one bit.

I LOVE ALL OF YOU... those directly involved in the protest - those unsure - those wanting nothing to do with it. Y'all know who you are, and you all know me well enough to know I don't jump into anything lightly, that I love hard fast & strong & that I would never intentionally

With respect to all the folks involved in this....

I never saw this as a fight... This was a way for some of us to express frustration with the many glitches in the world of MOG that we've seen for over a year now. it was my way of saying - I want to be heard MOG, I want to see an effort put into fixing the glitches & gaseous pains that have been a regular ocurrance for me. I don't want more new features til the necessities are fixed - or at least improved.

I never meant for this to be a problem for my friends & MOGily - I know it's upset quite a few of us - I am included in that group as well.

But I've noticed that many of the comments that have been made on MOG, have been of the poor MOG variety, & in some degree vilifying the people who've basically taken a week's vacation from the world of MOG. Even in your comment here Chris... I don't see this as we're wrong or they're wrong... but I am fed up with the expression that we are the ones who have to come back with our collective tails between our legs & act as if nothing has happened & delete any reference to the past week.

This IS a real issue for me. My favorite place on the internet, the place where I've had the opportunity to meet like-minded souls, forge friendships & expand my family has been "ill" with intestinal issues for a year & I want it to go to the doctor & get better. I don't want to be harrassed on my PERSONAL email account by people WHO WORK FOR MOG, I don't want to be kicked out sometimes 20+ times before I can log in only to get knocked out when I try to post.

How did this get to be such a hot topic ???

When I come back - I am leaving this week behind me, not forgetting it, standing behind what I did & why I did it, but I am not going to belabor the point.

I may come back early - I may wait til Friday... regardless, I don't want to be made to feel like I've done something I should be ashamed of... I've stood up for something that I hold dear to me & I've done so with respect to MOG & to all those who reside within the world of MOG. Period.

Much love goes out to you & to everyone at MOG & Multiply... As I said in my last post, WE DO IT ALL FOR THE LOVE Y'ALL.

Reply to This

The strikers shouldn't be ashamed, you did what you felt you had to do, and there were many that felt that "personal affront" and that is terrible... from this guy, there is nothing but love on all sides... I was neutral, but saw and felt some of the hate from the non-striking side, and threw down my two cents (and more - hence this site)

Whatever happens with the people at MOG, the business of MOG, or even the technology at MOG, hopefully this can be a place where MOG peeps can at least congregate and share music, video, and blogging posts, and hopefully (as I have heard from many) that they "don't disappear without a trace..."

Some have said that Multiply is good for that - but I also know of many that can't wade through the MOG/tiply multiverse... and so hopefully people will at least register here, so that we don't fall out of touch.

I car enough about the people of MOG and the relationships formed there, that I will ultimately even build a better mousetrap if I have to... just to continue sharing the music and the friendship.

Cheers!
Van
